I would not recommend John Hancock for retirement account services. In my personal experience, they consistently make it extremely difficult to access or withdraw your own money, even after you follow every instruction they give. I was repeatedly asked to provide proof of address, complete CID letters, and submit additional documentation. Even after complying, I continued to receive the same responses and no progress was made toward releasing my funds. When I asked to speak to a manager, I was told it wasn't necessary or was given excuses, and then left on hold without escalation until the call ended. Watch out for this company. I closed my account in 2022 after leaving my employer. In 2023, my former employer made an additional contribution that John Hancock accepted without properly notifying me. They held this money for over 2.5 years, charging fees the entire time, while I had no knowledge the account existed. When I discovered this and contacted them, their customer service was terrible. Two different representatives refused to refund any fees and cited 'company policy' - but couldn't provide any evidence they ever notified me about the deposit or account reactivation. I'm filing a complaint with FINRA and encourage anyone in a similar situation to do the same. This practice is unacceptable.
Difficult to work with, expensive fees, and can't get your money back when you are done with them. I've waited months to roll my money over and the continue to come up with technical reasons not to allow it to be moved into a reasonable institution. I did not realize there were such terrible investment firms. I honestly am waiting for them to claim a typo on their own paperwork to deny my roll over
The roadblocks created (in my opinion) by John Hancock to stand between you and you money are numerous. The same process I used with Fidelity and it took 10 minutes and a phone call and MY funds were in MY personal account the same day. John Hancock, on the other hand required a notary, two sets of snail mail documents ( faxing and email not allowed).A copy of my original birth certificate, a three day delay while their third party administrator created a personalized document that also needed to be snail mailed back. And apparently NO office in my state to go pick up a check from.Delay after delay after delay. A 24 hr process took nearly two weeks. It bordering on criminal in my opinion. If I could give zero stars I would. Their customer service has been horrible. My father passed away in Nov 2021. We submitted for his life insurance at the end of Dec. My brother was paid out within 2 weeks. They make promises and don't follow through. I've had to keep in constant contact with them and even though they confirmed that they have all they need since March, I still have no check. It's now May 3rd.
